Picture the scene. A cold, windy evening on a dark, eerie deserted street in Shoreditch. February 14th. And now slightly concerned at the impact of nearly ten years of marriage on romance levels.
Mr S and I rock up to a beige battered RV with red racing stripes down the side. Seconds later a man with a respirator and yellow hazmat suit emerges ‘Yo B*itches! Wanna cook?’
The magic words to a person who dedicated 2 months of her life binge-watching (in between kiddie catastrophes), one of the best TV shows on Netflix – ‘Breaking Bad’.
For those who have no idea what I’m on about: You have not lived. You need this show in your life. In a nutshell a guy decides to cook crystal meth in a RV to fund his health care when he gets cancer. Now go and subscribe to Netflix.
ABQ recreates the RV experience with you’ve guessed it – cooking cocktails instead of crystal meth. Inside, the attention to detail is second to none. From the one-eyed pink teddy to Walt Whitman’s ‘Leaves of Grass’.
The insides resemble a secret laboratory with strange scientific experiments at every turn. The music was on eclectically on point too. Through the evening I was bopping away on the narrow padded bench to Notorious B.I.G, Tupac, Nancy Sinatra or even the ‘The Book of Life’ theme tune.
In the know…
- 2 hour booking cost £25
- In a 2 hour session you can make up to 2 – 3 cocktails
- Bring a CLOSED bottle of base booze – Vodka, Whisky, Gin or Rum
Gas masks, measuring jars, and glass beakers adorn the small tables and a team of lab assistants provide the extra equipment you need to make your cocktails with the all important recipe card.
Our first cook was the 505 smoking martini – Lychee, Rose, maple martini finished with a dry ice smoke infusion. It was smoking hot and mind-blowingly strong – Mr S and I were very happy indeed.
The second was The Fly, Vodka infused with xanthan, lime and cola cavier using nitrogen. An all time fav of the Cartel down down South apparently. The recipe card came with a whipper (a contraption to nitrogen infuse our drinks) and petri dish.
There was also a fun 15 minutes (Carry On style) of trying on the hazmat jumpsuits. It was quite a challenge to put on in tightly packed RV of around 22 people – squishy is an understatement. Although I think yellow is my colour!
The only thing I felt was missing was a Los Pollos Hermanos outside to numb the munchies. Not that I eat chicken, but I could have done with a bag of chips after all the cooking and drinking.
Shoreditch may not live up to the New Mexico desert, but I felt like Jessie Pinkman or Walter White could jump out at any minute. They may not be the best cocktails you ever taste either. But cooking up in an RV all the way from Alberquerque ‘Walter White Style’ is an experience which left me feeling giddy. It sure helped to fill the big ‘Breaking Bad’ shaped hole in my life.
