Avenue: Bottomless brunch in Mayfair

Avenue, Mayfair

Brunch has become part and parcel of our weekend. The little people in my life on a morn jump into the bed, flick on the TV and are subsequently glued to it with no desire for sustenance. Much to my delight, as it can sometimes give me a whole extra hour in bed. Finally peeling ourselves out of bed it’s too late for breakfast, but too early for lunch. Hence evolved the love of all things brunch in our household.

However, with little people in tow the bottomless variety doesn’t feature much. So when the opportunity arose to quaff countless glasses of bubbles at Avenue in Mayfair with a group of friends, I was there like a shot.

Located in affluent Mayfair, Avenue’s decor echoes that of a New York urban brasserie. White walls adorned with modern art, tilted lampshades, and a humongous installation of glasses hanging upside down like a chandelier.

The restaurant was abuzz during the brunch service, the large open space echoed with the sound of happy prosecco-fuelled diners. So much so that I did wonder at times if I’d turned into my grandma. It was very difficult to hear a full conversation.

Once seated we looked through the menu full of American classics – Waffles, burgers and mac ‘n’ cheese. There’s a great selection of eggs too. You can choose two courses for £23.50 or three for £26, for an additional £15 per person you can also indulge in unlimited prosecco or bloody marys. Quite good value when you take into account the part of London you’re dining in.

Our eyes (well mine and Helen’s) were on the unlimited bubbles. Once ordered our glasses were immediately filled and going forward we never saw the bottom. Good service right there.

I began with  grilled spiced poached pear with yoghurt and oats. The pear was juicy and deliciously flavoured. The sweet honey coated clusters of oats added great texture and sweetness to the dish.

The buttermilk waffles topped with mixed berries looked equally delicious. They can also come topped with bacon if your tastebuds so desire.

The rest of the table followed the classic American route for mains with buttermilk chicken burgers and fries. Filled with succulent chicken there was a lot of chewing with nodding approval going on around the table.

My scrambled eggs and avocado on toast came perfectly cooked with the creamiest of avocados. It usually comes with smoked salmon, but for my non-pescatarian ways it arrived without.

The plan was to only go for two courses, but the pumpkin and cinnamon cheesecake soon put an end to that ridiculous idea. I feared for my stomach from the sheer size when it landed in front of me – Huge is an understatement. Looks can be deceiving though, it was so light and airy it went down a treat.

Fizz-fuelled Sunday afternoons are the way forward!  When it’s teamed with good food it’s the perfect setting to relax with friends. Avenue is definitely worth a visit, next time I’ll be checking out the ‘Hard Shakes’ on their menu. Alcoholic milkshakes guys! I know, how could I not have tried one with flavours like bourbon, maple syrup and salted caramel ice cream? Clearly there will be a next time.

Do you have a favourite brunch place? I’d love to hear about it. Let me know in the comments box below.

That place looks beautiful (and so does the piece of cake, yummy!). I have never heard of unlimited bubble deals but sounds like a great plan, especially if it’s good bubbly! 🙂

Those buttermilk waffles look incredible but I have to say, I’m not usually a huge egg lover but the avocado and eggs on toast look so good!
