One thing I never expected and I’ve loved since I started blogging is the community which engulfs you. In these last few months the blogging community has provided me endless support, advice, inspiration and most importantly some lovely virtual friends who are fast entering my reality. The latter is what bought me to Bronte, an absolute stunner of a restaurant.
I arrived early and propped up the bar waiting for Maggie from Planes & Champagne, who writes a luxury lifestyle, food and travel blog. She constantly has me in oohs and ahhs with her blog from the fabulous places she visits through her globetrotting.
It took me a while to pick my poison. The first page of the bar menu resembled a pimped up juice menu. Finally I ordered the Gin Bunny – Beefeater gin, carrot, orange, lemon, turmeric and ginger. I described it as ‘dangerously good’ to the barman. Simply because it tasted like my morning juice albeit a copious amount of alcohol.
Drink in hand I started to take in my impressive surroundings. I’m talking pink concrete bar, emerald green leather booths, pink curved chairs, double-height ceilings, huge palms and cascading reflective pendant lights. Tom Dixon has transformed the space into a swanky, inviting space.
Once Maggie arrived and of course ordered her champagne cocktail apéritif, we headed to our table and eyed up the menu. Full of ingredients from far-flung destinations, such as yuzu, peri-peri, kaffir lime, limoncello, chimichurri, harissa to halloumi.
My pretty little starter came in the form of roasted beetroot with yuzu honey goats curd (£6). The soft and runny goats curd had a delicate, creamy flavour. A classic combination with the different textured beetroot.
Maggie’s chorizo and prawn scotch egg on a bed of Aleppo chilli sambal (£7.5o). It came with one of my favourites. A padron pepper. Who doesn’t love a game of chilli roulette at dinner time?!
My main looked deceivingly small. An edamame and kale pancake with smoked avocado ratatouille, sheep’s milk yoghurt and harissa (£14). Fluffy and full of flavour, it was very filling indeed.
The soft shell crab burger – Cornish crab, avocado and sriracha aioli in a brioche bun with fries (£15) was definitely a showstopper. Maggie certainly looked like she enjoyed it.
We couldn’t end our lovely dinner without dessert, both opting for chocolate chilli fondant with blood orange sorbet (£7.50). The chilli provided a slight kick which tickled my tastebuds with every mouthful. And of course mine came with a fine-bodied side in the form of an espresso martini. Just perfect!
I think the restaurant’s namesake Admiral Nelson, 1st Duke of Bronte who stands on top of a 170ft column would wholeheartedly approve of the new resident in his Square. Attentive service, fabulous food and fantastic company.
Amazing how you can meet someone for the first time and gasbag for five hours non-stop before realising at 11:30pm that you really should head home. Somehow I don’t think this will be the last time I meet Maggie or visit Bronte!
