Not the first place you’d think a vegetarian would choose for a spot of dinner. Fear not, the name only relates to the street name not the piggy food on offer.
This is my third visit to the eclectic interior designed hotel. Purposefully chosen for a girly goss sesh, being a self-confessed Firmdale Hotel junkie and the fact this place had to be included in my blog.
The Ham Yard is a short stroll from the hustle and bustle of Piccadilly Circus. And on arrival it doesn’t disappoint with it’s eye-catching, full of statement designs along with its busy, buzzy atmosphere.
For a cold Tuesday evening the bar area was heaving (but that’s Soho for you). After a fair wait and Nathalie’s excellent loitering ‘Give me a seat’ technique…
We sat down and sipped away on our expertly prepared cocktails – a Ham Yard Tonic – well when in Rome (Portobello Road Gin, Campari, St Germain, grapefruit bitters and homemade tonic water). And a Black Mamba (Portobello Road Gin, homemade spiced blackberry coulis, lemon and honey). Tasty, tasty, very, very tasty.
The dining area is airy and spacious designed with exotic textiles, zany patterned wall coverings and abstract paintings. The à la carte offers a selection of seasonal European dishes with lots of fresh vegetables and fish. With dishes that are uncomplicated and unpretentious – a major plus.
We started with White Bean Soup with truffle salsa (£7) to warm our cockles from the freezing temperatures outside. It was comforting and homely with a lovely smooth texture and the truffle salsa gave it an extra special twist.
The mains were substantial. I tucked into the roast celeriac with dressed lentils, spinach and goats cheese (£15). Looks wise it wouldn’t have won any prizes. I was faced with a carpet of lentils and the presentation was rather shoddy. You’ll have to believe me as the one photo I took was completely out of focus and not worthy enough to add. But as I was taught by my mother – never judge a book by its cover. I was pleasantly surprised by my first mouthful. The celeriac was cooked beautifully with just the right amount of goats cheese for the perfect tang factor.
There was a nod of approval from my fellow diner as she tucked into her chicken, crushed carrots and parsnips, brussel tops, pancetta with sage butter sauce (£18).
Neither of us finished our dishes as the portions were huge. Very good value for money.
Rubbing our full bellies we couldn’t resist dessert so shared the peanut butter ice cream profiteroles with nut brittle and warm milk chocolate sauce (£6).
Top decision – it was yummy. The cold smooth ice cream, fluffy profiterole tops, crunchy nut brittle along with the heavenly warm chocolate sauce provided a great texture and flavour combination.
Safe to say that I’ll be returning again, there’s so much more to do in this place – afternoon tea, a 176 seat cinema-theatre, a Scholastic Spa and a 1950s bowling alley!
Oh and I can’t go without mentioning the wallpaper in the toilets. We loved it so much we had to have a picture with it.
