I think we’ll all agree one of the best things about travelling is experiencing different places and cultures. For me this is closely followed by the food! I couldn’t wait to see what the capital city of Tyrol would offer.
Being vegetarian I suppose trying to eat local delicacies in any county is slightly tricky. Ok, so I won’t be eating the Wiener Schnitzel, but believe me I’ll be hunting down the next veggie alternative. And Innsbruck did not disappoint.
We indulged in a mixture of classic Tyrolean cuisine and being so close to its Italian neighbours some amazing antipasti, pasta and pizza.
Our hotel was home to one of the most recommended Tyrolean restaurants in Innsbruck Weisses Rossel restaurant. With a history dating back to the 1600s this is the best place to sample the cuisine.
I indulged in the typical Tyrolean dish of Tiroler Gröstl. Fried potatoes typically mixed with chunks of beef, but for this plant lover substituted with peppers, carrots and mushrooms. It’s served with a lovely coleslaw drowned not in mayonnaise but an oily, lemony dressing – delicious. Simple, rustic fayre. Very similar to the English version of a breakfast hash or bubble or squeak, it went down a treat.
If you’re craving sweet treats whilst strolling the streets of Innsbruck, Cafe Mundig is the place to go. It dates back to 1803 and is said to be the Tyrol’s oldest Konditorei-Café. Serving mouth-watering cakes, pastries, chocolates and macaroons.
And if you’re thirsty head straight for the hot chocolate. You’re served a tall glass of warm milk with a large chocolate bomb on the side. Drop that chocolatey sucker into the glass and stir for the most delectable chocolatey hot chocolate this side of chocolate heaven!
Daniels – Swarovski Crystal World
After the bling of the Swarovski Crystal World you there is an equally impressive on site café/restaurant – Daniels. The white curved pavilion with floor-to-ceiling windows offers views of the surrounding gardens.
The restaurant serves international and regional cuisine and prides itself on using only seasonal produce. The stand out dishes we tried was a delightful looking ricotta ravioli topped with sun-dried and fresh tomatoes.
The cauliflower and broccoli gratin is presented with hidden chunky potatoes and covered in the most delicious melted cheese.
Enjoying your meal while staring out at the sparkling Swarovski crystal clouds in the gardens is definitely a charming and relaxing way to eat.
There’s only way to get to Restaurant Seegrube. Well two ways if you really want to work up your appetite and hike! The Nordkettenbahnen cable car takes you to the highest restaurant in Innsbruck in just 20 minutes. Located 2000 metres above the city you can enjoy some Austrian favourites with a side of amazing panoramic views.
The restaurant is over two floors with a modern informal canteen on the ground level and posh table service restaurant on the first. The one thing you can’t leave this restaurant without eating are the Knödeltris or dumplings!
They came in three varieties cheese, spinach and beetroot. Utterly divine. The perfect hiker fodder!
The girls probably ate the best Kasspätzle of the trip. Austria’s version of macaroni cheese topped with crispy fried onions. A firm favourite on our trip!
OK you can’t go to Austria without eating apple strudel. I managed it though – Let me explain. Even if you haven’t seen The Green Man, you may have heard of Vienna’s Cafe Sacher, home to the most delicious Austrian pastries and the original Sacher Torte. They also have a café in Innsbruck’s Imperial Hofburg Palace. We first experienced this chocolate heaven on a trip to Vienna four years ago – a chocolate cake thinly coated by hand with apricot jam and topped with chocolate icing. With a secret recipe. So we couldn’t resist a trip down memory lane and indulge in another slice.
