Located between Moorgate and Liverpool Street Station the unassuming, plain exterior of 3 South Place is a stark contrast to the striking, classy, innovative decor within.
South Place Hotel Brunch
it’s very name tells you that you’re getting the best of both worlds. Firstly, unlike with breakfast there’s the option of an lie-in and secondly you can generally eat more over a longer period of time. What’s not to like? Add to this the new bottomless and boozy varieties popping up all over London and you’re in a win-win situation!
The dismantled mannequins and eye-catching artwork lend a quirky and sophisticated vibe to the restaurant.
It also earned full marks on lighting – my recent photography obsession. I want these spider illuminations in my home!
The main restaurant is a mix of individual and long communal tables, sofas and floor to ceiling windows.
There is something to suit everyone on the menu, you either have a choice from the à la carte or the 2 course (£22.50) and 3 course (£27.50) set menu.
The set menus come with the all important unlimited Prosecco, Bellini or Mimosa for £15. And when they say unlimited they mean it. I’d barely finish a glass before a waiter whisked over another – Top marks for attentiveness.
We all opted for 2 courses with bottomless drinks (of course). It didn’t take me long to choose my main, with there being only one vegetarian option available – wild mushroom and butternut squash mac & cheese.
If I’m honest I’ve seen better looking ones. Most importantly the taste was spot on – creamy, well seasoned and deliciously cheesy, everything you’d expect from the dish.
The Cumberland sausage and mash, with caramelised onion and sage gravy looked like something you’d rather not discuss at a dinner table, but apparently tasted divine! Other main options included smoked salmon and scrambled eggs on sourdough toast, fish and chips, Devon red chicken pie and croque madame.
Whilst scoffing all this food we were serenaded by a tuneful jazz performance by Noeme Nuti. I was very impressed by the singer and double bass player, who even made a rendition of ‘Happy Birthday’ sound quite classy.
Musical artists perform twice a month during their brunch service. It all added to the relaxing atmosphere and I was lapping it up.
Losing count of the number of bellinis consumed (maybe 3 0r 4 by this point). It was time to order dessert. No contest really, it had to be the banana waffles with butterscotch. Soft, sweet and gooey in equal measures – They didn’t last long.
When booking the table we were informed the table came with a two hour slot, but we were left happily chatting away quaffing our bellinis.
Eventually we decided to move to the comfy sofas in the bar area and ordered teas (like our bladders needed anymore liquid).
The South Place Hotel really is the perfect place to catch up with friends, family or loved one. The warm friendly atmosphere makes you feel like your at home, until you spy some contemporary piece of artwork from the corner of your eye or Easter psycho bunny!
The bottomless brunch is incredible value for money and it’s hard to fault the South Place hotel. Could this mid morning meal herald the death of the Sunday roast? Well it’s giving it a run for its money. I know this won’t be the last time I walk through those doors.
