Celebrations at Plum + Spilt Milk at Kings Cross

The very next day from flying back from my summer holiday in Austria I hot-footed it over to The Great Northern Hotel in Kings Cross for a very special birthday lunch at Plum + Spilt Milk.

Excitement levels were high for Shirin’s 40th birthday celebrations as joining the lunch would be some of my very close friends from way up North too. Living so far away it’s a rare treat finding quality time together. For the Northern contingent arriving by train it was the perfect location for their day trip.

Decor

Upon exiting the swish lift you enter a classically elegant dining room steeped in the old school romance of railway journeys. The airy space is decorated in muted blues creams and browns with a drop-dead gorgeous cluster of pendant lights as the room feature

This was my second visit to the restaurant where Chef Director Mark Sargeant, formerly head chef at Gordon Ramsay’s Michelin-starred restaurant at Claridges oversees a seasonal British menu. I recalled from my previous dinner experience a separate vegetarian section on the menu. Always a plus to not have to trawl through the menu to figure out what I can actually eat.

Of course we began the birthday lunch with bubbles

A couple of glasses later with tummies rumbling we were all pretty pleased when the food started to arrive.

Food

My starter of whipped goats cheese, pickled roots salad and toasted seeds (£10.50) was a delight. The creamy goats cheese combined with the sweetness and crunch of the root vegetables was perfect.

It was followed by tenderstem broccoli, grilled courgettes, panko crumbed eggs and hazelnut dressing (£19). Yum-diddly-scrumptious is not an exaggeration. It really was!

Dessert

The restaurant served a lovely plate of birthday truffles for the birthday girl(s). The other birthday (a week before) belonging to my talented poet friend Aneela. Here she is thinking about an ode to the truffle:

I tucked into the iced peanut and salted caramel mousse (£8.50). It was like a posh Snickers bar. The smooth peanut parfait along with the salted caramel was divine. I was sharing the dessert- mistake! After the first bite I suddenly wanted to sneak off with it without Shaheena noticing!

And is there any other way to end what felt like the longest birthday lunch in history (we arrived at 1pm and left at 5pm)?
