Tell me one person who doesn’t love smelling great. Yes, I’m one of those women with an array of perfumes for every mood, occasion or change of season. Do you have a favourite perfume? Now, imagine creating your own bespoke perfume and exuding the aroma of a goddess or god!
From Britney Spears, Pharrell Williams to Beyonce, everyone seems to be making their own eau de sleb. Now us mere mortals can jump on the bandwagon and create our own perfume. And let me tell you, it does feel pretty special. It’s all possible through the BuyaGift experience days, they have over 4000 to choose from and perfume making is just one.
The Perfume Studio is a fabulous concept which places its clients in control. The opportunity to create your own signature luxury fragrance is quite empowering. From a range of 21 exquisite blends created by master perfumer Francois Robert, it’s a fun and easy process to design your own scent. Francois comes from a family of renowned perfumers, his grandfather was the creator of Chanel 19 and Francois himself is the man behind Charlotte Tilbury’s Scent of a Dream.
These fabulous masterclasses are available at various locations around the UK and last around 2 hours. With a glass of bubbly in hand you delve into the wonderful realm of perfumery. The trained master perfumers offer the chance to sample each sumptuous blend, explain their properties and how each relates to different personality traits. I found it fascinating how your choice of blend also reveals part of your identity. It’s like a perfume and psychology workshop rolled into one.
There are so many scents rolling around, after a while it became hard to differentiate. Top tip – keep sniffing the bag of coffee beans, it helps to neutralise your sense of smell before moving onto the next. The master perfumers guide and help identify the type of note each is blend belongs to, whether it be top, middle or base note. For example top notes make a very impressive initial impact, but don’t last long.
Mid notes are the most important and help to set the tone, whilst base notes is where the longevity lies and forms the body of your fragrance. You know the lingering aroma on your scarf, that’s your base note.
After half an hour of smelling my way through all 21 blends, I finally made my decision with a four blend mix fragrance. For someone who likes staying power, I opted for two base notes – Woody (Sandalwood, Cedarwood, Tonka and Amber) and Mossy (Oakmoss, Patchouli, Orange, Labdanum, Styrax and Armoise). Combined they both gave a rather sophisticated edge to the fragrance. My middle tone came from Neroli (Bergamot, Lemon, Neroli, Mandarin, Rosemary, Green Tea) adding a fresh floral citrus edge and depth alongside the rosemary. Finishing with a top note of Green (Green Teas, Boronia and Aloe Vera), and a zap of freshness like gorgeous freshly cut green grass or raw green bananas. Named Curious of course!
Curious is best described as a refined, almost masculine fragrance with musky, woody notes and an essence of the exotic. Typical of the type of scents I’m drawn too, I’ve never been the sweet, floral type. With this in mind I chose my packaging to compliment the scent, a 20ml elegant navy atomiser.
The Perfume Studio’s impressive range of bottles, cases and atomisers in an array of colours relate to the different packages offered. They even have stylish pens with a mini atomiser attached to the top – Very James Bond! Fear not, no matter which package you choose from BuyaGift, you can easily pay the extra if you’re seduced by a bigger bottle on the day. And the cherry on the cake your scent can be registered on The Perfume Studio database and reordered whenever you run out. Your own fragrance for life, how amazing is that?!
