In an era where everyone is hunting for their next new experience, be it through travel, festivals or dining. An online platform has neatly tapped into this experience economy market and bring it straight to your fingertips.
Workshops and experiences in London
EmptyChair a UK based experiences community operates an online marketplace for workshops, classes and events. And it does exactly what it says on the tin. It helps you find an ‘empty chair’ in your local painting class, stress management workshop or tequila tasting masterclass to name a few.
Via your laptop or mobile app you’re able to connect with local artisans, community craftspeople and independent studios. There really is something for everyone. Fancy upping your cooking game? You can choose from private plant-based classes, Indian cooking to molecular gastronomy techniques. A creative? How about a BYOB pottery class? There’s even a class entitled Blow Your Mind, a 1.5 hour women-only class where you learn all about the fine art of fellatio. I kid you NOT!
Evening classes London
When I was invited to try out the online platform I was specifically drawn to the creative workshops and finally decided on the leather accessories evening class.
Once booked online and with my email confirmation in hand, off I trotted to a cool workspace in Bethnal Green called The Pill Box.
The class is just one of many courses offered by I CAN make shoes. Yes you can make shoes there too – Sandals, sneakers or heels! How cool is that?! These are either full days or for longer, I was only there for two hours. In this time you can either make a passport holder, luggage tag, key-ring, card holder or clutch bag. Obviously I went for the latter.
Handmade leather bag
Choosing the leather I’d say was one of the hardest parts from the Aladdin’s box of beautiful off cuts.
From start to finish you’re guided through the process of making your own simple leather clutch.
You’re taught how to use the templates and learn tips on cutting the leather precisely. The most exciting part was acting all professional with the semi industrial sewing machine.
I think the last time I used one was in my home economics class at school. Yes millennials, there was such a thing back in the early 90s. A last ditch attempt to teach you aspects of household management before your released in the world.
Finally the finishing touches of the gold sam browne fastening, brings it all together and VOILA! The best two hours I’d spent doing something practical, sociable, hands on and so creative. I was so happy with my handmade clutch bag..
Feeling inspired? There are 1000s of bookable activities online. Each one helping hundreds of micro-entrepreneurs to monetise their passion. At the moment the platform is only London based, but there are plans to roll it out to Manchester, so watch this space.
