After a recent multi million pound refurbishment a trip to the Royal Lancaster London was definitely on the cards. And as luck would have it an invite popped through my email box for a bloggers lunch at the Island Grill, one of the restaurants at this luxury Hyde Park hotel.
Hyde Park hotel restaurant & bar
Just minutes from Lancaster Gate station, overlooking Hyde Park through floor to ceiling windows, the light airy space is a great spot for London views. Island Grill’s menu serves modern, locally sourced British dishes with a focus on sustainability. Awarded 2 AA Rosettes and a Sustainable Restaurant Award 2015, you’re guaranteed the use of fresh, local, seasonal ingredients.
The meal began with bubbles as we all perused the menu for a fair while. We started with freshly baked sourdough bread, it’s always a good sign when it arrives warm.
For starters on the table we had crisp pork puff with barbequed apple sauce. More like air-popped pork scratchings, which were still popping as they arrived on the table.
There were a dozen pretty looking chilli and garlic scallops and I went for wild mushroom on toast served with apple balsamic, and wild garlic with a poached egg crowning a slice of toasted sourdough.
A restaurant which labels itself a grill usually means slim pickings for a vegetarian. Not at Island Grill, there is such a great selection nearly everyone on the table gave in to their herbivore tendencies. It pleased me greatly, as I awaited patiently with my empty fork to dive into each dish.
We ordered the quinoa and wild mushroom parcels served in a mushroom broth with braised fennel; a colourful plate of crisp polenta with heritage tomato chutney and crisp sage and roasted cauliflower steak with caper and raisin dressing topped with a pinenut salad.
To remind ourselves that we were actually at a grill there was also a grilled free-range chicken seasoned with mushroom and rosemary.
The table decided to end with a farmhouse cheese selection, but I couldn’t resist ordering the vegan chocolate and ginger sponge. Moist, fluffy and beautifully spiced, hard to believe that it was actually vegan!
In an area saturated with mediocre, overpriced restaurants, Island Grill is a pleasant surprise. Fresh sustainable and eco-friendly food, at affordable prices. And veggies: don’t be put off by it being a grill. You have options…YAY!
