It’s not like I need an excuse to be pampered. I had a birthday on the horizon and a new spa opening down the road. Sister-in-law’s birthday shenanigans – sorted! A perfect opportunity for us both to forget responsibilities and unfinished chores for few hours at least.
M by Montcalm London Shoreditch Tech City
Although remembering at the eleventh hour that I had do something about my gorilla legs did lead me to a mad panic hunt for my neglected razor in the morning. A momentary sadness took over at the removal of a layer of warmth from this rubbish cold winter weather.
Hairless now. We were both super excited at the prospect of leaving our little sprogs in daddy daycare. Off we trotted down the road to the luxury Shoreditch hotel M by Montcalm, who have recently launched a brand new spa M Spa. Fifteen minutes door to door – happy feet!
Located on City Road, near Old Street station and the hustle and bustle of the Silicon roundabout – London’s Tech City scene. It’s the perfectly positioned for all the stressed tech wizards and city bankers in the area (or stressed mummies!)
Within M Spa
We were not disappointed on arrival, M Spa welcomes its guests into a low lit, moody reception with burning scented floor candles creating a pleasing, relaxing ambience.
Once we filled out the regular health forms we were led to the changing rooms. They were clean and very white if slightly on the small side. Whilst changing into our swimsuits we did have a few tango-esque moments with our fellow spa goers trying to use the same locker area. The locker contained the usual bits and bobs you’d expect – a robe, towels and a pair of flip-flops.
Swimsuit-ready we wandered to the spa area, which housed a pool, jacuzzi, sauna and steam room. It was all very snazzy looking with accents of gold.
On first sight there appeared to be a shortage of seating areas, but we managed to bag a couple of loungers in the appropriately titled ‘Chillax’ room. It also houses a fully equipped state-of-the-art gym and aerobics room, not that we saw them on this visit.
Enjoying the facilities or in my case simply unwinding and chilling out in the tranquil atmosphere, we whiled away an hour sipping on refreshing cucumber, orange or lemon infused water.
The spa has three treatment rooms with a broad range of facials, massages, body, nail and grooming treatments on offer. We were having our massages at the same time so ended up in the couples room (good job we’re not the shy, retiring types!). And opted for the 50 minute tailored massage (£95)
After the three deep inhalations of the lavender infused massage oil, soothing sitar music in the background and continuous deep strokes, I was very quickly transported to a relaxing sleepy place. You know you’ve had a good massage when the therapist asks you (twice) ‘Did you enjoy your massage?’ And you’re shaking yourself awake to answer. Disappointed that it’s all over whilst hoping you weren’t snoring.
Once composed we headed out of the room back to the changing rooms with cheesy cheshire cat ‘I’m all relaxed’ grins, only to be confronted by the receptionist for our card details. Taken aback. Still wearing my paper knickers. I asked if we could deal with the payment once we changed, which of course they agreed to straight away. It was definitely one way of knocking the zen out of me in one fell swoop. And very bizarre customer service for a spa.
Although M Spa did tick the boxes of relaxing and rejuvenating us both, there are a couple of areas I feel which were lacking. The customer service needs working on. Not the best idea to make your guests feel like you’re worried they’ll do a runner in their flip-flops and robe. Also smarter thinking in terms of layout for the changing areas would really enhance the experience.
Don’t get me wrong we did have a great time and perhaps these are just initial teething problems for a newly opened spa. With a few tweeks M Spa has the potential of being a very special space. And being only fifteen minutes walk away it’s not going to put me off from going again.
