Off The Beaten Track Family Travel With The Voyageurs Collection

Some of the best memories are made during family travel. A time to unplug from everyday distractions, concentrate on bonding, exploring incredible destinations and cultures whilst nurturing a lifetime of love for travel.

Having a family doesn’t mean you need to sacrifice where you travel. Granted planning a family holiday can be hard sometimes, particularly when ensuring the destination suits everyone’s needs. It’s why you often see many travelling to the same places year on year for ease. Why fix something that isn’t broken, right?

A key ingredient when planning an adventure is the travel company involved to help make your holiday ideas and dreams a reality. With kid specific knowledge on destinations and facilities available is crucial to help manage expectations when heading off the beaten track.

The basis of our big family holidays revolve around discovery, exploration and most importantly authenticity. We want to feel the place, know the people that live there and immerse ourselves in the culture.

The Voyageurs Collection is portfolio of original itineraries created by the award-winning tailor-made travel companies Voyageurs du Monde and Original Travel. The travel company harbours all these qualities, as I discovered on recent trips.

At the core is taking the stress away from holiday planning. The team of travel experts start by getting to know their clients in order to meet expectations and personalise trips with meticulous attention to detail.

On our beaches and backwaters trip to Kerala the seamless travel arrangements from start to finish with family in mind was amazing. The same applies to the travel experiences on offer and the unparalleled knowledge of an area. On a recent food tour of Verona, all our needs were catered for by a passionate local guide.

Sustainability and responsible travel is paramount too. The company promises 100% carbon absorption from the footprint generated by air transportation of its clients. Combating climate change and giving back is a huge plus when booking with The Voyageurs Collection.

What really won me over is the little extras which make a big difference to a trip, such as the local concierge service to help arrange additional activities or assist in mishaps, pre-booked seats on the airplane, UK airport lounge access and fast track UK security. All of these services come standard with each booking. Family travel has never been easier. It’s one of the main reasons I’d feel so confident about travelling to adventurous destinations with the kids.

Now that my little ones are not so little anymore we’ve slowly upped the ante on holidays from physical hiking trips to walking on the wildside with unbelievable safari moments. The Voyageurs Collection boasts an exciting portfolio of family holidays designed to satisfy all ages and interests. Here is a selection of my hotly tipped favourites for the year ahead:

Costa Rica

The sheer number of opportunities for wildlife encounters and adrenaline-fuelled adventures on offer in this corner of South America is excitement enough. Mix in some of the richest biodiversity on Earth – volcanoes, rainforests and beaches and you begin to understate Costa Rica’s draw.

On the Nature-Focused Exploration tour kids can marvel at the sloths in slow motion and vibrant keel-billed toucans, hike through the forest canopy, spot fluorescent green tree frog and raft on the Saraquipi River. This is a small country that packs a large punch from Arenal’s hot springs to the endless mangroves and dazzling beaches. A drama of Costa Rica landscapes for all the family to enjoy.

Stepping through the wardrobe into Narnia – a magical snowy fantasy is how I imagine a Finnish winter. Finnish Lapland straddles the Arctic Circle and the official home of Father Christmas.

Little ones can hang out with huskies and reindeers, build snowmen, and toboggan down fells and whizz through the snow-dusted wilderness on snowmobiles. Fun filled winter wonderland days can end with steamy saunas and evenings spent sipping hot chocolates and watching the mesmerising Northern Lights. It’s a breathtaking place to enjoy an Arctic adventure.

A trip to a country which divides opinions so dramatically, may seem like an odd choice for a family holiday. However, travelling with older children brings the responsibility of discussing cultural complexities. With a passion for visiting fascinating destinations learning about the people who reside in Israel and crucially the Palestinian West Bank.

Learn together when exploring the history, religion and politics. It’s not all educational either – float in the Dead Sea, snorkel in the Red Sea, fall in love with the beautiful Tel Aviv beaches, feast on the tastiest mezze and admire the dramatic views of the Negrev Desert.

Myanmar (Burma)

The southeast Asian country of Myanmar has remained relatively untouched by the outside world. Temple-strewn landscapes, jungle covered mountains, to cruises down the famous Irrawaddy River from Bagan to Mandalay, ancient cities, and best of all spectacular white sand beaches framed with colourful coral reefs for relaxing after epic adventures.

The Yangon, Bagan, Inle Lake and Pindaya holiday ticks all the boxes for an unforgettable family adventure. In addition to the concierge service, late check outs and private tours it includes a visit to an elephant sanctuary and private cruise. Bring on the culture!

Since our first foray into family safaris, we can’t wait to return to the wilderness. Africa’s lesser known wild Namibia, wedged between the Kalahari and Namib deserts is a country of diverse landscapes and intriguing.

On an intrepid road trip explore great grasslands where herds of game roam, the vast sand deserts with giant sand dunes at Sossusvlei, endless shimmering salt pans and the amazing desert coastline whilst not forgetting the spectacular Skeleton coast. Home to the Etosha National Park for incredible wildlife spectacles the family friendly activities are endless.
