Potatoes are the super stars of the vegetable world in my opinion. Being vegetarian if a potato doesn’t feature in my meal in some shape or form, I feel like I’ve not eaten a proper meal. Be it mashed, boiled, fried, roasted or baked I am hands down their biggest fan!
You can imagine my glee when I was invited to sample The Potato Project’s take on the humble jacket potato. Founder Ksenia Karpenko has worked her magic and transformed the potatoes into fine gourmet specimens.
The menu is in two sections: ‘A twist on classic’, which sees delicious flavours such as smoked ham hock, pesto mayo, chilli beef ragu, and sun-dried tomatoes. Not all at once I might add!
For the more adventurous there is the ‘Something a little different’ menu and it’s where my eyes landed. My spud was filled with autumn wild mushrooms, spinach, blue cheese & truffle oil (£6.20). Being a truffle fiend I was in potato heaven. With a perfectly crispy skin, the decadent filling was hearty and moreish.
The second jacket was loaded with pulled bbq duck, mozzarella and sesame seeds (£6.65). The generous filling and fluffy potato received a big thumbs up from the recipient.
Everything is cooked in-house and made to order. You can even pimp up your potato. The kitchen is happy for you to mix and match the toppings and create your own tasty concoctions.
There are sides on offer too between the £2 – £2.70 range, such as sweet potato hummus with pear, a half loaded avocado and root veg slaw to name a few.
The little café mainly harnesses the takeaway trade. If you prefer to eat from a plate you can hang out on the stools or head to the large table downstairs perfect for groups or families. Be warned though at lunch time you’ll find a big queue of hungry potato junkies. So waiting patiently is a pre-requisite.
We ended the carb fest with a gin and tonic ice cream, there’s a choice of salted caramel or mango sorbet. There was no way I was going skip a G&T when it’s on offer.
If you’re on time-constraints and the belly is rumbling, I’d highly recommend giving this place a whirl. Good, honest food with decent prices and definitely a healthier choice than some of the fast food restaurants in the area. Gourmet tatties are the future!
