Who doesn’t love a midweek jaunt? Especially one which involves a new boutique hotel stay with fellow bloggers and an award-winning afternoon tea.

An hour’s train from London and short taxi ride later we found ourselves at the Laura Ashley Hotel – The Iliffe in Coventry. Formerly known as The Chace Hotel, it’s undergone a quintessentially British and timeless transformation. Only three miles from the city centre it still has a real countryside boutique hotel feel on arrival.
The mock tudor hotel sits in three acres of landscaped grounds once owned by Henry VIII. Constructed in the late 1890s, the manor is named after the well-respected family it was built for – Dr Charles Webb Iliffe and wife Mary Ann Soden.
Inspiration for the whole redesign is taken from the buildings Victorian heritage. The spacious oak panelled lounge with its classic leather chairs creates a relaxing atmosphere from the moment you enter.
And the perfect place to indulge in a glass of Prosecco or two! A grand sweeping staircase leads to its 17 elegant bedrooms furnished in Laura Ashley decor.
The Deluxe Room is spacious with different seating areas, and enough in-room amenities to keep you entertained all day. A DAB radio, a glass jar of sweets, tea and coffee making facilities including a Nespresso machine, proper cups and saucers, chocolates as well as biscuits. The offer of fresh milk if preferred is always a gold star in my book. Never been a fan of the long life mini cartons often provided in hotel rooms.
All the rooms are styled differently with soft colours, feature wallpapers, classy lampshades, chandeliers, luxurious velvet throws and plush cushions. The Signature Room also features a gorgeous four poster bed.
Bold mirrors add glamour, thick curtains add luxury while bathrooms are well-lit. You can’t help but eye up everything you want for your own home. And can’t help thinking why other home stores don’t have their own branded hotels.
A pillow menu is left by the bedside to ensure a super comfortable stay. Choose from firm, soft, luxury, u-shaped and many more. Simply call reception with your preference and it will be delivered to the room ready for the best night’s sleep.
Before long it was time to try the award-winning Laura Ashley Tea. Winners of the Award of Excellence at the Afternoon Tea Awards 2019, expectations were high.
The luxurious treat is amplified by the tastefully decorated Tea Room in signature Laura Ashley style of course, which overlooks the landscaped gardens. Think fresh green hues with accents of blue, painted pistachio walls and the most delightful peacock wallpaper.
An ideal setting to indulge in a pot of Darjeeling alongside some freshly made vegetarian finger sandwiches, delicious welsh rarebit, warm scones with lashings of clotted cream and a dollop of fruit preserve. And not forgetting the irresistible cakes and pastries which I managed to squeeze in too. Confirming without a shadow of a doubt their award-winning status.
For dinner we meandered down to The Willows Restaurant. It offers a sophisticated dining experience in a spacious room with many of Victorian manor house’s original features such as the ornate fireplace and mullioned windows.
A bottle of rose began the evening proceedings with the three course menu starting with a warm goat cheese tart, followed by a main of tempura spiced cauliflower, aubergine hummus and coriander. The pan-fried scallops also received a huge thumbs up from the table.
By the time we reached desserts, we were too full to order one each. So shared the cheese board and a sublime vanilla creme brûlée. The menus at The Iliffe offer both vegetarian and vegan options whether dining at the restaurant or Tea Room. With a seasonally changing menu local produce is used wherever possible.
Breakfast the following morning was self-service. The choice is fresh and tempting, from fruit salad, cereals, pastries, cold meats, cheese and a selection of fruit juices.
Hot food is available to order and I couldn’t resist a smashed avocado on toast with poached egg. You can take the girl out of London, but she’ll still want her avo in the morning, right?
The Laura Ashley brand provides guests with a relaxing home from home experience with their beautiful home range in a stunning property. Conveniently located for exploring Coventry, Warwickshire, Royal Leamington Spa and Kenilworth there are plenty of places to visit. Rooms are priced from £89 per night for a superior including breakfast and great value for an escape away from the everyday.
